First of all, we need to under what IELTS Speaking module is? It is a test of your English speaking ability that is conducted for 11- 15 minutes. The examiner is going to determine your level of understanding English as well as responding in English according to the questions asked during the IELTS Speaking Test. In this exam, you are going to face a real examiner who is going to ask you introduction questions, Que- Card and a few follow up questions.

Let us move on to the Basic IELTS Speaking tips:

Be Formal:

IELTS speaking exam is more like a job interview not completely but somewhat similar to that because you are going to face an examiner in a formal manner. Do not forget to take permission before you enter examiner room by politely saying “May I come in Sir or Madam?.” It certainly leaves a good impression on your examiner. Do not grab the chair to sit down directly until you are offered one by the examiner.

Be Polite:

This is an important way that helps you interact with your examiner in a formal manner. For example, if you could not understand a question or a word said by the examiner, just be polite and ask “Could you please repeat the question?” do not be too straight in your approach by saying What? Sorry? or I did not hear you. It will not help you to win over the examiner and would surely interrupt your connection with him or her.

Have a Good Posture:

Maintain a straight posture to keep an eye to eye contact with the examiner. This will help you to express your confidence that will further help you maintain the peace with the examiner. Students who sit improperly in front of the examiner often appear as lazy or not so impressive. So avoid not appearing like an uncomfortable one.

Speak Words Clearly:

Your words should be clear while you are interacting with the examiner. You should be able to speak clearly to convey what you exactly want to tell to the examiner. Do not be in a hurry. Otherwise, if you do not have that good command over English, chances are you may skip some important words or phrases that you actually needed to add into your conversation. It often happens with the students and they lose their fluency.

Maintain Fluency:

Do not be over- conscious or over- confidant while you are replying to the examiner’s questions. Try to maintain your flow of speaking English nicely. You do not have to speak faster but you will have to speak clear and a bit louder so that the examiner could mark up your English speaking skills properly. Maintain your natural speed of speaking English as there are no extra Bands for speaking faster.

Take Time to Understand the Question:

It is really very important that you should pay full attention to the examiner’s question in order to understand it nicely. If you will not hear it properly, you will miss the right track and end up replying the things which may not be asked by the examiner. Many students lose their IELTS Band in IELTS Speaking Test due to this reason only. It is seen that 43% students often say that we could not hear or understand the question asked by the examiner. Always remember, your examiner is right in front of you and talking live to you, he or she is not playing a recording for you that would be played only once. As explained in the Tip: 2, be polite to ask the question once again and try to understand it properly.

Speak up only when it is your turn:

Again very important! Be forewarned that getting too friendly with the examiner is not going to help you score good IELTS Bands in IELTS Speaking Test. You are not there to build up a relationship with the examiner. But you are there express your ability of understanding and speaking English to score good IELTS Bands.
